The September equinox (or southward equinox) is the moment when the Sun appears to cross the celestial equator, heading southward.
In Slavic Paganism this date was indicating the harvest festival - the feast was initially associated with the cult of plants, trees and agriculture.
In the modern western Pagan tradition the holiday of the autumnal equinox is a ritual of thanksgiving for the fruits of the earth and a recognition of the need to share them to secure the blessings of the Goddess and the Gods during the coming winter months.
